Referees' Cup Report - Sat 17th Feb 2007 v Ampthill Print E-mail

Wellingborough 20  v  Ampthill 18

The Colts moved into the second round of the Referees Cup with this nail biting victory over Ampthill. Boro defended stoutly in the first half as they played up the slope and they soaked up much of the pressure Ampthill could throw at them.  It was inevitable however that Ampthill would get some points and they scored through a try and penalty.  Boro came back into the game just before half time and centre Joe Marsden kept their hopes alive when he carved his way through to touch down.

Boro had the advantage now but it was Ampthill who increased their lead with a converted try.  Boro's skipper Adam Danns crashed over soon afterwards and with Adam Martin converting ,Boro were now applying all the pressure.  Ashley Etherington put Boro in front with his first try since returning to the club but Ampthill restored their lead from a penalty.  With the referee looking at his watch Boro had one last chance and following a scrummage on the five metre line the ball came back to Martin who dropped a goal to take Boro through to the next round.
