Wellingborough 43 - 5 Huntingdon

Wellingborough's backs showed what they are capable of with good ball ably supplied by the forwards to beat Huntingdon in their first home league game. After only 3 minutes Chris Mears caught a cross kick on his own 22, beat two men and slipped the ball to Dominic Smart on the half way line who ran clear to touch down under the posts. Pete Vickers duly converted.

There followed a period of pressure from the vistors including a rolling maul of 20 meters resulting in Kelvin Todd being sin binned for halting it illegally. From a turnover Chris Mears again broke out from his own 22 and fed Pete Vickers who stepped his way up to the opponents 22. A subsequent scrummage saw Wellingborough take one against the head and quickly move the ball out to Dominic Smart who went over in the corner. Peter Vickers again added the conversion.

Huntingdon hit back with a catch and drive from a lineout in the hosts 22 and crashed over for a try from the resulting maul. There were then some even exchanges of play until on the stroke of half time Chris Mears picked up a loose ball and broke through from the half way line. He glided up the wing while Dom Smart switched inside to take the scoring pass when Mears was finally confronted with the full back. Try number 3 for Dom Smart which Pete Vickers also converted.

The home side turned round 21-5 up at half time and after several phases of play soon made this 24-5 through a dropped goal by Pete Vickers. This was followed within another 10 minutes by a great crash ball through the centre taken by Tom Meyer coming in off his wing. This set up several inter-passing plays and quick rucked ball from which Pete Vickers through a long pass out to Dominic Smart for try number 4.

Wellingborough now took the opportunity to introduce all their replacements; Adam Lambert, Jon Bolton and Joel Dyer. This seemed to spur them on even further and once again Tom Meyer broke through the centre and this time fed Chris Mears who took the ball up to the visitors 22 before off loading to Dominic Smart who beat two men on the outside to run around and score under the posts. Try number 5 which Pete Vickers again converted.

There then ensued a long period of pressure from the home side but a "stop start" period which prevented a score until a penalty was awarded to Wellingborough. They kicked to the corner for the lineout, won the ball and used Tom Meyer to crash through to set up a ruck from which Craig Hughes snapped up the ball to dive over under the posts. Pete Vickers duly converted this to bring the final score to 43-5.
