1st XV Report - Sat 29th Sept v Daventry |
Wellingborough showed no mercy as they scored 8 tries against Daventry on their own patch to follow up on the high score recorded last week. Dominic Smart continued his good form scoring another 3 tries rounding off some good inter-passing plays by backs and forwards alike. Wellingborough were soon on the offensive and forced a penalty after 5 minutes. It was missed but they soon made amends when Steven Gall broke through the centre and confronted with the full back, slipped it to Rob Armstrong who ran in under the posts. Pete Vickers converted. Daventry struck back with 2 penalties in the next 10 minutes but Pete Vickers replied with one of his own. A period of mixed territorial domination followed but Wellingborough put together the better passages of play allowing Dominic Smart to make ground up the wing and Tom Meyer delivered the final sprint to the corner to score. The forwards then got in on the act with a powerful drive resulting in Kier Davidson claiming the touch down. Minutes later, right on half time another break in midfield by the visitors was halted 30 meters out but skipper Dudley Cross was on hand to pick up and feed the backs who put Dominic in for his first try. Wellingborough turned round 26-5 up but they were not satisfied with that and were soon on the score sheet again. Centre Craig Hughes set up a ruck in midfield and from the resultant quick ball Steven Gall broke the Daventry line and fed Dominic Smart who provided the score. Pete Vickers converted. At this point Joel Dyer came on for Rob Armstrong and Andy Fordham for Adam Lambert. They slotted in immediately and some good phases of play from one side of the field to the other enabled Steven Gall to break through again to score. Kelvin Todd then replaced Keir Davidson for the last 20 minutes. It wasn't all one way traffic, but Wellingborough's defence was good and from a catch on their own 22 they worked their way up field with some good inter-passing between forwards and backs. Steven Gall again fed Dominic Smart in space and he beat 2 men on the outside to score. Pete Vickers converted. On 35 minutes Wellingborough won clean lineout ball on half way and Steven Gall, with a great running line cut through the defence and sprinted all the way to score under the posts. Pete Vickers converted to make it 51-6. Daventry were determined to have the last say and pressured the visitors line for the last 5 minutes but they held firm and deservedly came away without their line being breached.
