1st XV Report - Sat 27th October v Lutterworth |
Wellingborough came out on top against Lutterworth in front of a large crowd of Past Players who had attended a pre-match lunch. They started off at a cracking pace scoring two tries in the first 10 minutes. Dominic Smart and Ben Heffernan provided the touchdowns with Pete Vickers converting one. Lutterworth provided sterner opposition after this and used the wind to keep pushing the home team back into their half as soon as they worked their way up field. After 30 minutes Pete Vickers increased the score with a penalty and then Wellingborough put together some good phases of rugby. From quick ruck ball Steven Gall then went around his man to score near the posts. Pete Vickers converted to make the half time score 20-0. The home side now had the wind advantage but Lutterworth kept them out for long periods. It was beginning to look as if there wasn't going to be a score when Pete Vickers was again on target with a penalty. This spurred the home side on and Pete Vickers gathered his own chip ahead to pick up and score. He also converted it. Lutterworth were not finished however and they worked their way into their opponents 22 setting up a driving maul and going over for an unconverted try. The disappointment of the home side was palpable and from the restart Kyle Danns took the ball, made ground and slipped it to Dominic Smart who rounded off the afternoon with his second try. Pete Vickers struck a magnificent conversion from the touchline to complete the score. Higgins man of the match: Peter Vickers |
