1st XV Report - Sat 1st December v Leicester Forest |
Playing down the slight slope yet against the wind the home side stated their intention very early on when the ball was worked along to the right wing and after some further interpassing Dudley Cross was driven over the line to score. Peter Vickers converted from the touchline. The new look backline was showing it's paces and Joe Marston, making his debut for the first team, was looking particularly sharp. He had had a hand in the first try and now he came into the line from his wing and broke through to feed Peter Gilby who raced over the line. There followed a period of territorial equality with neither side being able to turn any advantage into points. From the restart after half time the ball was quickly recycled for Peter Vickers to kick to gain ground. The resulting lineout when the visitors cleared their lines was won by Wellingborough and Chris Shipman carved through the defence and set up Peter Gilby for his second try. An uncalled for "2nd tackle" on Peter Vickers when he was already in touch resulted in a neck injury for him which he tried to play on with but eventually he was replaced by Rob Armstrong. There followed a long period of attrition with the home side valiantly defending their line. The visitors couldn't cross and despite a ridiculous penalty count in their favour, could not put any points on the board. Eventually Craig Hughes chased a long kick out of defence from Rob Armstrong and was rewarded with a try under the posts which Joel Dyer converted. Now the home side were able to relax a little and play a bit of expansive rugby but the time had run out and they finished as 26-0 winners to maintain their 2nd place in the league.
