East Northants Cup Final report - Sun 16th March 2008 v Stewarts & Lloyds Print E-mail

Stewarts & Lloyds 40 - 7 Wellingborough

Wellingborough contested the East Northants Cup Final at Stewarts and Lloyds without their normal first team.  They played against the elements in the first half and were defending their line directly from the kick off.  The S & L forwards showed their intent by driving over the line to score a converted try in the first minutes of the game.  There was much more of this to come with the home side enjoying almost total territorial advantage in the first half.  After 20 minutes from a 5 metre scrum S & L went to go open and switched the ball to the blindside and the winger went over in the corner.  The try was converted from the touchline.

Two minutes later, poor tackling from the visitors let the home side in for another try and then just on the half time whistle S & L drove over the line after several phases of play to take the score to 26-0.

Wellingborough struck back after the break, taking advantage of the wind to spend time in S & L's half.  A neat chip over the backs from Rob Armstrong allowed full back John Schoeman to run onto the ball and score under the posts.  He converted his own try.  The visitors looked to be getting back into the game when a good drive from the home forwards took play fully 40 metres upfield and from the final surge they crashed over the line close to the posts.

For sometime this looked to be the last score from S & L as Wellingborough again came back and enjoyed some territorial advantage.  However they couldn't break the home defence and with a few seconds left the home Fly Half made a break in midfield and sprinted to the corner for the try.  A conversion again from the touchline pushed the score up to 40-7 and the Cup was theirs.
