Dunstablians 14 Wellingborough 25
Wellingborough kicked off the season with a trial game against Dunstablians ‘Academy’. The game was split into four quarters to enable both teams to try lots of new ideas for the coming season.
The game started of with some good pressure by Dunstable however the first score came from Wellingborough number eight Dan Coxall. The second score again came from Wellingborough, with a try coming from a poor mistake by the Dunstable full back with Luke Moloney the benefactor scoring under the posts. The score at the break was 12-0.
The third quarter was not to be Wellingborough’s with two quick scores in succession by Dunstable leaving the teams at 14-12. The final quarter however showed how well Wellingborough’s pre-season training had gone by showing superior fitness and racking up 13 points to finish off the game. The first came after a few breakdowns of play the ball was shifted across the borough backline and Dan Fitzhugh dived in from a few yards out for an immediate reply. Wellingborough then went for a lock range penalty from kicker Sam Barthram who took the game out of reach for the home team. The game was then finished off by some good play by the Wellingborough backs leading to a try by winger Dom Driscoll.
