Match Report - Sun 9th Nov 2008 v Stafford |
Stafford 0 - 64 Wellingborough Wellingborough travelled to Stafford looking to keep their good start to the season going. In appalling weather the match was reduced to 12 a-side due to the home team being short of players. However, this disruption, and the freezing rain, did nothing to dampen Wellingborough spirits as Emily Underwood opened the scoring with a try after five minutes. On a day where the ball was like a bar of soap the handling among both the Wellingborough backs and forwards was immaculate. As the Wellingborough pack started to dominate a much larger set of Stafford forwards both in the tight and the loose, the ball they served up for the backs allowed Wellingborough to run in a further six tries in the first half including a pair from centre Theresa Boden-Jones and a first for the club from fly-half Marie Sayler. The other tries came from Emily Underwood again and wing Natalie Smart. On a day where the ball was like a bar of soap the handling among both the Wellingborough backs and forwards was immaculate. With the forwards in control, and with outstanding performances from Becky Woodgates and Stephanie Cannell driving them on it was only a matter of time before they were rewarded with a try through number 8 Elaine Addy. With Kerry York marshalling the backs superbly a further three tries came through Kerry herself of which she converted two. The general performance all round was outstanding in atrocious conditions and the week on week improvements bodes well for a very successful season, the ladies next match is at home to Bridgenorth on Sunday November 23rd. Player of the Match: Becky Woodgates |
