1st XV Report - Sat 28th Nov 2009 v Syston (H) |
Wellingborough’s good run of form came to a halt on Saturday as they went down to 2nd placed Syston 70-10. Playing up the hill in the first half Borough went to sleep on two occasions which allowed the opposition scrum half to run from 2 quick tap penalties to open a quick 12-0 lead. Borough soon hit back with some good attacking play and created space for Dom Smart to cross in the corner. Pete Vickers converted from the touch line. Within minutes the home side were again causing Syston problems which led to the opposition flanker being sent to the sin-bin for 10 minutes. From the resulting penalty Vickers kicked the 3 points to bring them within 2 points. But from the restart Syston ran the ball wide and used a set game plan to perfection which enabled them to cross 3 more times before half time to make the score 29-12 at the whistle. Any thought of Borough getting back into the game was soon crushed as their visitors showed why they are pushing for promotion and continued to dominate in every aspect of the match. Wellingborough failed to stop the set attacks that Syston used over and over again and scored from pretty much every time. The final whistle could not have come sooner for Borough. Pete Vickers said after the game “We were very disappointing today. Syston played a set game plan that some of our players could not play against. We will have to do a lot of work this week to put things right for our next game”. |
