Pack Power but still no point

By Matt Armstrong

Week 10 and this week its the turn of Peterborough

This week saw the Boro entertain newly promoted Peterborough at Cut Throat Lane. The team saw a number of changes again from the previous week, in the front row Charlie Frankham moved from the bench to hooker, and Ben Morton-Bright dropped to the bench to be replaced by Will Bigley. In the second row Alex Booth made his first start for the ones and in the half backs Andy Seaton moved to scrum half from full back. The outside backs also saw a couple of changes with Luke Gardiner starting at outside centre and Luke Smith starting at full back. On the bench, Ben was joined by Ewan Pattison and Tyler Chant.

1st Half
The first half saw Peterborough kick off down the slope and Boro started off well, keeping the ball through a number of phases. However, the opening score came within the first 10 minutes and saw Peterborough waltz through the Boro defence to score a try (Boro 0v7 Peter). Boro's lineout was certainly proving to be a weapon and the forwards started to crash the ball up and into the Peterborough defence. Eventually the positive play with the ball and the ability to keep it through a number of phases saw Boro awarded a penalty shot at goal which Tom Mair duly slotted (Boro 3v7 Peter). It was soon followed up by another penalty as Joel Smith demonstrated some good leeching skills and drove the Boro forwards through the fringes around the Peterborough ruck.

This multi phase carried on throughout the half and again Boro were awarded a penalty within kicking distance which was converted by Tom Mair bringing Boro to within a point (Boro 6v7 Peter). Soon, it was Peterborough's turn to have the ball and it took some strong play from Boro to prevent the score. Boro were soon back on the attack and it was Peterborough's turn to fall foul of the referee as he sent a player to the bin to cool down. Boro took full advantage, a kick to the corner saw Boro with the lineout, a well constructed drive saw Boro edge over the try line and Alex Booth dotted down for the score (Boro 11v7 Peter).

2nd Half
And much last week you want the match report to end there as you kind of know what's going to happen, so on to the second half. From the kick off Peterborough exerted some early pressure on Boro and were awarded a penalty shot which was taken (Boro 11v10 Peter). This was then quickly followed up by another Peterborough score, this time a try as Boro struggled to gain a foothold in the half (Boro 11v17 Peter). The Boro forwards started to wrestle back control of the game and with Andy Seaton controlling the pack from scrum half they started to make progress through a strong defence. Again, this positive play was awarded with a penalty shot but this time it was missed but it was soon followed up by another after Luke Gardiner had chased a well placed kick. This time the penalty shot was converted by Tom Mair (Boro 14v17 Peter).

However, Boro were soon on the end of a yellow card decision this time Tyler Chant was sent to the bin and initially Boro hung in there, some scrappy play from both sides saw no real advantage gained by Peterborough. The intensity that Boro were trying to play at soon took its toll as a couple of injury substitutions took place, this resulted in a loss of structure and as a result Peterborough scored their third try in the corner to extend their lead (Boro 14v22 Peter). Boro kept going though and after a great scrum turnover they nearly scored, it was just that final pass letting them down, but even though a lot of effort was exerted it was Peterborough who scored the final try to win the game (Boro 14v27 Peter).

Another game and another loss, however, there were a lot of positives to take from this one. The forwards in particular took the game to Peterborough and deserved a much closer score than occurred. This week sees a weekend off for the 1s but the A team take on Rushden in the Saxby Cup so get over their to get your weekly fix!!
